My birthday offering for the 250th anniversary of the birth of our nation

Dear Reader,

A few weeks ago, as I was doing my morning practice and honestly feeling pain around the current state of my beloved country, this phrase came into my mind: Twelve Steps for the Recovery of the American Soul. As you may know, or not know, I spent a great deal of my adult life working with alcoholics and addicts and their families and friends. I became very familiar with the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous.

Since it was first published in 1939, there have been many versions of the Twelve Steps—some specifically for cocaine, or meth, or sex addicts, or Al-Anon, for family members who are related to an addict, also Buddhist and Native American versions, and more. Since its inception, AA and its cousins have helped millions of people to regain their lives and stay sober. In my book, Integral Recovery: A Revolutionary Approach to the Treatment of Alcoholism and Addiction, I speak of Alcoholics Anonymous with great respect.

So, I feel I am within a strong tradition presenting the Twelve Steps for the Recovery of the American Soul. It has landed very powerfully with the people I have shared it with, and now I am sharing it with you. It actually inspires possibility and hope. And this is not copyrighted—please feel free to use it and share it as you are inspired.

This is my 4th of July, 250th birthday gift for all of us – and for you. Let’s not become hopeless or cynical; things can and do change, often for the better.

God bless. Thank you for all you are and all you do.

Much love,

John Dupuy and the Deep Transformation team

P.S. Many members of the Deep Transformation community are not Americans, but as I used to tell my students in recovery, this is basically Humanity 101, good for everyone, but you’re the squeaky wheel so you’re getting it now.

Also, I’m not trying to tell anyone how they should run their country. If we figure out how to run ours, I’ll let you know.
